Whale Route

It is one of the miracles of the ocean when whales, those huge and heavy sea mammals give birth. Mostly it happens in the seclusion of the deep sea, only a few times in the shallow water close to the coast - mostly invisible for humans.

Kindergarden of whales

South Africa is exceptional, because the whales prefer to leave the cold waters of the Antarctic and choose the warm Agulhas Stream in order to change the coast between Cape Town and Plettenberg Bay every year from may to the early October in a kindergarten of whales. You see the small tails jutting out of the water next to the huge ones of the adults and the blowing of water fountains is still not really perfect. But soon the babies glide as elegant and secure through the water like their parents do.

Get together

They enjoy themselves, getting together again; communicate by their chants, which can be heard far away in the land, swim in big schools and yoke again before going back in southern direction. You might apologize the way to describe their behaviour with quite human characteristics but who was a witness of this unique natural event, cannot forget the parallels to our well known kindergarten.

Metropolis of the whales

Not only the sea of South Africa is a paradise for the whales and the dolphins, orcas and sharks following them. Also the shape of the coast of this region is ideal – to watch the lively action in the ocean. The City Hermanus is in the middle of this region with perfect rocks to stand on and to watch from, with trails passing the cliffs, with numerous other view points and a “whale cryer”, who’s “Whale! Whale!” shouts in this period are regularly heard and make the people coming to the shore. From here and from the adjacent Walker Bay with village Gansbaai as centre boats or even canoes start regularly to go close to the whales, but don’t worry: Their radius is taken care exactly in order to not disturb them.

Comfortable

Excursions of this kind also start fromPlettenbergBay, but here with big and comfortable boats, which can be easily entered and thus offer a good possibility for children, older and handicapped people to watch this nature event. And also – in a respectful distance – special planes fly over them, but anyway the protection of the whales concerning their absolute right of quietude is put into practice here. Not only the whales, but of course also the dolphins, sharks and seals on the sand bank are left in peace and can be only be observed from a far distance.

Whale Hiking Trail

There are persons who discuss, if the view from land or sea to the marine huge mammals plus followers is better but while they are still discussing, smart hikers answer this question already from their observation post on the rocks of the Potberg Mountains, more precisely: from the De Hoop Nature Reserve. This Nature Reserve close to Bredasdorp is one of the most untouched nature reserves close to the coast line. A 5 day lasting hiking trail crosses the region between Potberg and Koppie Allies; and on this 54 kilometre there is not only the Fynbos Flora of the coast region to be experienced in unaltered biodiversity, also small types of antelopes cross the trails, sparkling brooks with clear water you can wade through and steep rocks you can conquer.

In the end of the day – in the pool!

It is the rocks, which give you the best and closest view to the whales directly in front of you. Often there are more than 50 whales in the shallow water of the bays – to give birth without being disturbed. And there is not only one of these observation points – the whale hiking trail is leading far along the coast line, is of different length from day to day and offers also relaxation for the body to the exhausted hiker: rock pools, natural pools, formed by rocks which are filled new with each flood.

Alternatives

In a different landscape, but still fascinating you can observe the biggest mammals of the world in their element e.g. in front of Overberg. Or at the Stony Point close to Betty’s Bay, where the whales show up regularly during their stay at the South African coast. Also in front of Onrus and from the cliff trail near Kleinmond you have a fabulous view on the only 30 meters away swimming whales. No other place in the world can offer you that!
