National Parks The national parks of South Africa belong to the most famous ones in the world. Besides a huge number of private game reserves there are 18 national parks. The most famous one is the Kruger National Park, the nature reserve with the biggest biodiversity and the biggest population of animals on the entire African continent. But also the Tsitsikamma National Park situated at the Garden Route or the scanty Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park amid the Kalahari desert are very known names. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park at the border to Namibia and Botswana is the prototype of an exemplary nature reserve. Thus, by extending other national parks beyond national borders, the game gets the possibility to resume its migration. As manifold the climate zones and landscapes are pictured, as diversified the nature and game reserves of the country are. One of the greatest fascinations is the observation of the “Big Five“, but it is unique in South Africa, that in various places along the three thousand km coastline you can even see the sixth one of the group of the “Big Six“: the whale. The huge sea mammals are perfectly suiting to elephants, rhinoceroses, lions, leopards and buffalos. But also the small inhabitants of the bush attract you with their charm or how to forget the sight of a weaver bird building his oversize nest? South Africa’s landscapes show a palette of many different geological forms, living and culture spaces. One day hiking in the deep jungle along the coast of the Eastern Cape, next day the cave-painting of the aborigines of South Africa in the scanty Karoo National Park tells about the traditions of Africa’s oldest people. One day later you find yourself in the heights of a 3000 m mountain top of the Drakensberg Massif, before visiting the game in bush again. With such a variety of possibilities there is no question about the manifold offer of accommodation and leisure for every taste in the South African nature reserves. Important is the difference between the national parks organized by the government, the province parks and the Private Game Reserves. The national Parks and the province reserves offer mainly standard accommodation, mostly huts and camp grounds with very reasonable prices. Generally you can also drive through with your own car as a guest for one day. In the Private Game Reserves you predominantly find luxury rest camps, from the romantic luxury tent to the suite in the bush. The Safari Program, meals and accommodation are mostly offered as a package tour according to the capacity of bigger travel budgets. Special adventure Safaris, game observation by foot or by horse are offered in both national and private game reserves.
